Matariki Returns

Matariki Returns

A few years ago most of the New Zealanders did not know what Matariki was. If you don’t know what Matariki is, it is the Maori New year. Now Matariki is celebrated with a festival on our national calendar. If you look in the sky at the end of May and early June you might be lucky to see 7 stars in the sky. They represent the 7 sisters. In the olden days people said if you could see the 7 stars clearly then the coming season will be warm.

When Maori people see the Matariki in the sky, it is a sign that hunting and planting season is close to an end. The Maori thinks that Matariki is the time to prepare for spring time and for the next year.
